Dear Representative:
On behalf of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, I urge you to vote NO on the amendment offered by Rep. Meehan to the FY16 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Act.
The Meehan amendment would put unreasonable constraints on Amtrak’s ability to operate a national passenger rail system. This amendment would effectively prevent Amtrak from making much needed improvements to its national infrastructure, and force the further neglect of routes outside of the Northeast Corridor. In order to truly function as a national network, Amtrak must have the flexibly to use its funds as need dictates.
Amtrak already faces inadequate federal funding, even as its infrastructure continues to age and deteriorate. The Meehan amendment would only serve to exasperate this problem on the national level. Please vote NO on this amendment.
