The stalled legislation still faces opposition from the rail industry, which is expected to continue with this new measure. The “remaining challenges in the Senate Rail Safety Act seem to be repeated in the new House companion legislation,” said Jessica Kahanek, assistant vice president of communications at the Association of American Railroads.
Meanwhile, labor groups have been pushing for a vote on the floor to get senators on the record. The “strange bedfellows” supporting the rail safety legislation — from Biden officials to Trump supporters — show how this legislation needs to be pushed across the finish line, Greg Regan, president of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, said.
“It’s the whole swath of American political spectrum,” Regan said in an interview. “If we got people from the farthest left and the farthest right all thinking that this needs to get done, maybe it needs to get done.”
