Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. by Focusing on Job Creation

By Admin

following statement about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the holiday on which we honor him:

“Martin Luther King, Jr.’s focus on economic justice is as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. As we honor Dr. King in 2010, we recognize yet again the wisdom of his teachings and the certainty that a good job is never just a paycheck – it is always an opportunity.

“With a national unemployment rate of 10 percent, and much worse in some cities and industries, let us commit to creating a stronger economy and preserving the middle class by creating jobs. Let us commit to restoring the basic rights of workers that are ignored by too many employers and elected officials. Let us commit to job training that gives workers the skills to be successful. Let us invest in our country’s transportation infrastructure to provide a lasting contribution to future generations and jobs to the generation that needs them now.

“We honor Dr. King by working to lift the lives of working men and women. On this day, and every day, transportation labor commits to doing just that.”
