WASHINGTON, DC – Edward Wytkind, President of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, offers the following statement regarding reports that a minority bloc of Senators is blocking rail, transit and bus security measures in the 9/11 Commission bill:

“We are utterly baffled that Senate Republicans raised procedural objections to block the House-passed rail, transit and bus security bill (H.R. 1401) from being considered in the 9/11 bill.

“New intelligence reports indicate that terrorist organizations are alive and well worldwide. Blocking such long overdue transportation security measures defies common sense and calls into question the motives of these elected officials.

“Who are these Senators serving by blocking this legislation?  We wonder who in Arizona, for example, is calling on Senator Jon Kyl to reject provisions that would protect our rail, transit and bus systems from terrorist attacks.

“We wonder whether these lawmakers have forgotten the horrific Madrid and London rail and transit system bombings.

“The majority in both houses must hold firm and insist on these needed security measures in the 9/11 bill.”
