WASHINGTON – Greg Regan and Shari Semelsberger, President and Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department (TTD), issued the following statement after a federal judge extended a Temporary Restraining Order preventing the Department of Labor (DOL) from closing Job Corps centers:
“We are pleased that the temporary restraining order has been extended, which continues to halt the closures of any Job Corps centers and ensures that the status quo holds.
“We are happy that the students can remain, safe and secure, in their housing at Job Corps campuses and that they continue their vocational training. The Job Corps program is a lifeline for at-risk youth in every community across America, from Alaska to Florida. In suburban and rural communities alike, there are countless success stories of Job Corps graduates who are the answer to regional workforce needs.
“Job Corps enjoys broad support among local businesses, chambers of commerce, national employers, and labor organizations; that’s why nearly 100 of these organizations sent a letter to President Trump yesterday to ask him to reverse the Department of Labor’s decision to discontinue the Job Corps program.
“We urge President Trump and Labor Secretary Chavez-DeRemer to keep Job Corps open.”
