TTD Commends EU Decision on Airline Emissions Tax

WASHINGTON, DC – Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD) President Edward Wytkind issues this statement on the European Union (EU) Parliament’s decision against proceeding, at least until 2016, with its plan to charge a climate tax on non-EU airlines flying in and out of Europe:

“We’re pleased that the EU Parliament will not implement a heavy-handed, unilateral plan to charge U.S. airlines an emissions tax that would have been harmful to our air carriers and middle-class airline jobs. We’ve said all along that the correct way forward is to address the airline emission challenge through the processes of the International Civil Aviation Organization. While the ICAO deliberations move ahead, we will continue to make the case against the EU’s proposal and in favor of a global, common-sense approach to curbing aviation emissions.

“We thank members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, as well as the Administration, for standing up for the U.S. airlines and their employees.”
