WASHINGTON, DC — Edward Wytkind, president of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), issues this statement in response to today’s terrorist attack in Brussels:
“Once again a nation’s transportation network – in this case a transit station and an international airport – was a target of a deadly, horrific terrorist attack. To say that we condemn this indiscriminate and cowardly act does not begin to express the outrage that we collectively feel. Today our prayers and thoughts are with the victims, their families and the citizens of Belgium as they seek to recover from a senseless act of terror. And we offer our gratitude for the first responders and medical professionals who we know saved lives today.”
“This attack serves as a reminder that our own transportation system remains a tempting target for terrorist elements both in this country and abroad. Frontline transportation employees need better training to identify threats and respond to attacks, transportation assets must be better secured and the TSA workforce must be given the tools and support they need to do their jobs.”
“We look forward to working with policymakers on these and other common sense transportation security reforms. For now, we join with those calling on transportation workers, passengers and law enforcement to remain vigilant and to stay safe.”
