WASHINGTON, D.C.—Edward Wytkind, president of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), issued the following statement today regarding the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s move to mark up H.R. 4926, a bill to designate the “James L. Oberstar Memorial Highway” and the “James L. Oberstar National Scenic Byway” in the State of Minnesota:
“Throughout his long and illustrious career in the House of Representatives, Jim Oberstar proved himself time and time again as a champion for workers in the transportation sector and throughout the economy. It was with a heavy heart that we mourned his passing earlier this year, and we commend the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for honoring his legacy and his dedication to our nation’s infrastructure and transportation system.
“An unparalleled expert in transportation policy, Jim Oberstar understood that when our transportation infrastructure crumbles our economy crumbles. He also understood it was the skill and hard work of the women and men who operate, build, maintain, and inspect the transportation system that hold together this vast network. Day in and day out, he honored and supported America’s transportation workers, and it is a fitting tribute that generations of traveling Americans will be reminded of Jim Oberstar’s contribution to our nation.”
