TTD Urges Administration to Pull Back Proposal Allowing Foreign Control of Airlines

WASHINGTON, DCThe following statement was issued today by Edward Wytkind, President of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), regarding the 291-137 overwhelming bi-partisan vote against the Administration’s proposal to allow foreign corporations to control U.S. airlines:

“For the second time, the U.S. House of Representatives has moved to stop the Department of Transportation from implementing a new rule that would allow for foreign interests to control U.S. airlines. Congress has correctly recognized that this proposal jeopardizes our national security, is not good for the U.S. aviation industry and would threaten the jobs and rights of thousands of workers.

“The Administration’s plan to allow foreign interests to control U.S. airlines has been strongly rejected by Capital Hill and it is time for the DOT to withdraw this misguided proposal. If the Administration insists on moving forward despite today’s vote, we will press supporters of today’s amendment to stand firm and demand that the ban on this rule remains in the final bill.

“We simply cannot allow our aviation industry to be sold-off to foreign interests and no amount of pressure from the Administration should force Congress to back-track from the position taken today. “
