Dear Senator,
On behalf of our affiliated unions representing hundreds of thousands of workers who build, operate, and maintain our nation’s transportation networks, the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), urges you to vote against the confirmation of David Cummins to serve as Administrator of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). As you know, more than 45,000 Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) lack Title 5 workplace protections, despite serving as the first line of defense for our skies and screening nearly 3 million passengers daily under significant pressure. It is essential that the leader of the TSA is highly qualified and prioritizes the well-being of the TSA workforce to best serve our country and national airspace.
In his confirmation hearing, Mr. Cummins voiced concerning views regarding collective bargaining rights for TSOs and defended the administration’s plans to expand the privatization of security screening. As America’s largest transportation labor federation, TTD believes that both of these principles pose a threat to the security of airports across the country.
Transportation labor firmly defends TSOs’ right to a collective bargaining agreement. Employee morale is crucial to a functioning TSA, and the workers who show up every single day to preserve the safety of our airspace should have a voice in their work environment. Federal courts have upheld TSOs union rights as the current administration has tried to dismantle them, and the next TSA Administrator must respect the law and support the workers who keep the agency running.
We also stand in staunch opposition against efforts to further privatize airport security screenings. The mission of the TSA is safety – not profits. We believe that a strict set of standards and regulations should be upheld by the federal government to fortify airport security.
We urge you to stand with the TSA workforce and uphold high security standards to protect the American public. Vote NO on the confirmation of David Cummins to be TSA Administrator.
