TTD Statement on Debt Ceiling Agreement

WASHINGTON – Greg Regan and Shari Semelsberger, President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), issued this statement in support of the negotiated deal between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to raise the debt ceiling, approve a budget, and avoid an economic crisis:

“We urge Congress to pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 and put an end to the manufactured debt ceiling crisis that threatens the financial stability of the United States. We cannot allow extremist House Republicans to continue weaponizing the economy and targeting our most vulnerable populations.

“Rather than submitting to calls for extreme cuts, this legislation protects recent achievements in job creation and economic progress for working families across the country by preserving the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, which continue to create millions of jobs in transportation, infrastructure, and manufacturing.

“The health of our nation’s people and economy must take priority over a divided government. It is imperative that Congress swiftly pass this bill and prevent a first-ever default.”
